Golden Rounds

The other day, my four year old daughter was eating some golden round crackers straight out of the box. In a flourish of joy and excitement, she swung her arm in an upward motion and the entire box spilled upside down and onto the kitchen floor. Like in a slow motion movie, I watched with horror and delirium as the crackers flew up and out and scattered every which way. To make matters worse, the floor was actually a rug in our Airbnb that had most certainly been stepped on by a plethora of people before us (insert vomit emoji here).

So what did I do? Like any good parent, I instructed my child to help pick up the crackers and put them back into the box. Waste not want not! And what did she do? She ran out of the room to go jump on a too-high bed. So I was left to pick up the crackers with my one year old baby who stepped on as many as she ate while saying, “Uh-oh!” over and over again.

Five minutes later, my one year old was holding the same box of (recovered) crackers. To my great surprise (not!), she lost her balance and therefore her grip, and the entire box came crashing back down. Crackers were soon crumbling everywhere beneath her tiny toes. Again, we picked up the golden rounds, eating some as we worked, and thought nothing less than of our good deeds to keep the rental apartment as tidy and clean as possible.

What’s the expression when you go for a hike? Leave no stone unturned? Don’t litter? Take nothing but memories? No, that can’t be right. In any event, the crackers made it back into the box and now they’re making their way into my mouth as I write these words to you, dear reader.

And can I tell you something? They’re still delicious.

  3. What rich description you provided! I envisioned those golden round crackers flying through the air and scattering across that AirBNB rug.
