I Made a Kid Cry Today

I made a kid cry today.

It wasn’t the first time

And it certainly won’t be the last.

It was time to clean up

From arrival activities.

And I didn’t realize

He wanted to save his work on the saving shelf

As kids do

To finish at a later time.

So I dumped the whole thing of playsticks

Back in the box.

He was facing the other way

When he heard the sound.

An unmistakeable din.

The clangy-clang sound of pieces colliding.

He turned around

And grimaced.

“Did you clean up my pieces?”

He asked.

“I wasn’t finished.”

He said.

“I was going to finish it later today at play centers.”

He cried.

I paused…

“Oh no, I’m so sorry.”

I said.

“I didn’t realize!”

I said.

I hugged him.

“I’m sorry.”

I said again.

“Do you forgive me?”

“No.”

He said,

As he shook his head.

I gave him

Another hug.

“I’m so sorry.”

I said.

  1. That is such a simple mistake, but the way you frame it in your poem is heart-wrenching. As a reader, you long for forgiveness from the student. Clearly this is weighing on you, and you are right — it will happen again. Thank you for sharing this small moment that pulls apart one of the many times a day your heart can be broken in education.
